This property was originally constructed in the 10th Century as a fortified tower for defence and communication and the evidence of this can be found in the external walls of the property which in places are over a metre wide. In the following centuries the tower was destroyed and rebuilt in the typically rural style in which it can be found today.
In the 18th Century the property was purchased by the noble Ricasoli family of Brolio Castle who turned it into a mill. The external aspect dates back to this period. The Ricasoli family crest is still in place on the principal façade of the building.
The principal house (440 sq m) was entirely renovated in 1999, and then underwent refurbishment again in 2010. The original renovation was undertaken with the utmost care to respect the historical structure of the building and to use local materials, whilst providing the modern comforts of a 21st Century home. The floors are entirely in terracotta, those upstairs being the original tiles dating back to the 19th century. The ceilings are made with wooden beams and terracotta, typical of farmhouses of the area. No detail has been overlooked, the original fireplace remains in place in the upstairs study, the wood oven once used for making bread still functions, the gently curving vault of the old tower remains, the hand-made stone staircase and original ironwork on the windows have all been carefully restored.
The main house comprises two floors which offer the following spacious accommodation:
Spacious kitchen and adjacent patio for dining al fresco | Sitting room with traditional stone and brick fireplace | Dining room with large arch window and original bread oven
Five double bedrooms / 3 of which offer en-suite facilities | Five Bathrooms | Main Lounge with fireplace | Morning lounge/study (first floor) with fireplace | Extensive attic storage
The barn which measures approx. 160 sqm, was converted into two independent apartments in 2000. Each apartment comprises one double bedroom, large family bathroom with shower, open plan sitting room /dining area / kitchen with modern appliances. Both apartments have terraces for al fresco dining, overlooking Meleto castle.
